Recommended Algae and Bacteria Control in Drums

The most common effect algae and bacteria can have on misting systems is the presence of a foul odor. Algae spores can be found in water throughout the entire U.S. They thrive in nutrient rich water (N and P) where sunlight and heat are available. The use of chlorinated water reduces the amount of algae but does not solve the problem completely. As a result, in misting systems a green or black residue can develop causing and odor and plugging up equipment. Bacterial growth is a direct result of microbial activity or compounds of iron, manganese or sulfur. Well water can contain excessive amounts of various strains of sulfate bacteria. Decaying organic matter will produce hydrogen sulfide, which results in a rotten egg like smell.

 

To reduce the amount of harmful petroleum products MGK misting products have water-based formulations. As a result, the potential for biological growth exists with the lack of these petroleum solvents.

 

To minimize this problem we recommend the following:

1. Clean the tanks and flush lines at least annually with a biocide such as sterilex

2. It is recommend that the tank nozzle be cleaned when servicing system

 

Shock Treatment

1. Clean drums with bleach (sodium hypochlorite 5.25% -i.e. Clorox)

2. Use 1 qt. of bleach to every 5 gallon of water

3. Spray or scrub interior of tank

4. Soak filter, hose etc. for 5 minutes

5. Repeat when necessary
