Sumitomo Chemical (“the Company”), including its Group companies, was recognized as a United Nations Global Compact LEAD (“LEAD”) company on the occasion of the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit 2018 that was held in September at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This recognition is a testament to the Company’s constant engagement with the United Nations Global Compact (“UNGC”) and the Company’s conducting business in compliance with the UNGC’s Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.

The UNGC is a voluntary initiative composed of over 13,000 companies and organizations, aiming to establish a global framework for realizing sustainable growth through their demonstrating responsible and creative leadership as good members of society. This year, the UNGC made the LEAD recognition criteria clearer in order to encourage companies’ commitment to the UNGC. As a result, 34 companies worldwide, including Sumitomo Chemical and another Japanese company, have been recognized as LEAD companies. LEAD Recognition Criteria 1. Be a participant in at least two Action Platforms, to demonstrate the company’s engagement with the UN Global Compact and commitment to defining and fostering leadership practices in line with the Ten Principles and Global Goals; and 2. Submit or commit to submitting an Advanced Communication on Progress — an annual sustainability report detailing progress on implementing the Ten Principles — within the same calendar year.

Sumitomo Chemical joined in the UNGC in January 2005 as the first participant from the Japanese chemical industry. The Company joined the UNGC LEAD in 2011 when it was launched and has since then engaged in various activities as one of the founding members. In 2018, the Company has participated in two action platforms: “Breakthrough Innovation for the SDGs” and “Pathways to Low-Carbon and Resilient Development.” Corporate Communications Dept. 27-1, Shinkawa 2-chome, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, 104-8260, Japan TEL: +81-3-https://www.sumitomo-chem.co.jp/english/ 5543-5102 FAX: +81-3-5543-5901 The Sumitomo Chemical Group will continue to participate in international initiatives
